acuteobtuse asked: I very much appreciate your style. Each piece of today's outfit looks great, but the proportions seam a bit off. There's a bunch of collar gap on the jacket (but the shoulders look great) and the tie knot is a bit small for the length of the collar points. What do you think?
I really appreciate your input. The odd thing is that when I stand in front of the mirror, there’s no gap. I don’t know if that’s because I’m standing absolutely perfectly, and the gap manifests itself when I stand and move more naturally (although I’m rarely if ever “natural” in front of a camera. Reading this made me check the archives to see if there’s a gap in any other pictures of this jacket. One pic has an open collar, in another, I’m wearing a sweater, so I can’t make any judgement based on those. Lo and behold, in the one picture of me wearing this jacket with tie, sans sweater, there appears to be the tiniest bit of collar gap. Good eye.
You are also 100% on about the tie knot. At 3.25 inches, it isn’t exactly skinny, but is a bit on the narrow side for me. At 6’5” I’m making my knot with a much narrower part of the tie than most men. I usually compensate for this by employing the double-four-in-hand. This tie (a vintage wool Calvin Klein number from the 80s) simply isn’t long enough for me to tie a double FIH without the short blade falling above my sternum. Not ideal, but I think it’s passable.
